Metamorphosis

This Installation of watercolors is assembled as a metamorphosis starting from the paintings on the left and evolving to the right.

It begins with rectangular portals constructed within abstract fields of color. The portals provide a platform we can imagine ourselves occupying and viewing the color field beyond. Rather than being a passive observer looking at a framed painting on the wall the portal invites us in to immerse ourselves in the painting and become an active participant.

The metamorphosis continues to the right where the rectangular portals are now set within a landscape—the abstract fields of color are taking form. Again the viewer is able to imagine entering into the painting using the portal as a destination to view the landscape, from within the landscape.

Continuing the metamorphosis to the right the landscape becomes more well defined with recognizable forms of nature. Rather than observing the landscapes from a portal one can now visually connect and rearrange the sequence of boards creating new landscapes. By transforming the landscape the passive viewer again becomes an active participant.

On the right the metamorphosis evolves into the human figure. Immersed still in landscapes and abstract fields of color the figures, like the active participant, are formed by the environment they are immersed in:
